(영문법)To 부정사 기능 및 역할

to 부정사는 [to + 동사원형]의 형태를 취하며 문장 속에서 동사가 아닌 명사, 형용사, 부사의 역할을 하는 것을 말한다. 부정사도 동사를 가지고 이용하는 것이기 때문에 동사의 모든 기능과 성질을 그대로 유지한다. 다만 문장에서 하는 역할이 위 3가지이다. 따라서 to 부정사란 무엇인가? 라는 의미파악은 할 필요가 없다. 품사가 일정하지 않다는 정도로 알아두면 된다.

A-1 명사역할
[예문] 

To learn English is not hard at all.(주어)
= It is not hard at all to learn English.
We expect to finish before the deadline.(목적어)
My goal is to master English as quickly as possible.(보어)
= To master English as quickly as possible is my goal

A-2 형용사 역할(명사수식/주격보어/목적격보어)
[예문] 

명사수식
I have no money to buy a new house.
Homeless people have no house to live in.
I need some paper to write on.
[주의]

to 부정사가 명사를 수식할 경우에는 전치사 사용여부에 주의.
Bring me a chair to sit.(X)
Bring me a chair to sit on.(O)

의문사 + to + 동사원형
I don't know what to do.(= I don't know what I should do.)
I don't know where to go.(= I don't know where I should go.)
I don't know how to drive.(= I don't know how I should drive.)

주격보어(형태: Be 동사 + to 동사원형)
We are to meet at Juan station in the evening.(예정: ~~할 예정이다)
We're to finish the report by the end of this weekend. (의무: ~~해야 한다)
You're to swim in the river. (가능: ~~ 할 수 있다)
If you're to pass, you have to work hard. (의도: ~~하려고 하다)
He was never to see his father again. (불가피한 경우: ~~ 할 처지에 있다)

목적격보어 (목적어 보충)
I wanted my son to be a doctor.
The rain caused the river to rise.
I saw him enter the room.
He allowed her daughter to go out.

A-3 부사 역할
부사가 문장에서 하는 역할은 동사. 형용사, 다른 부사 수식, 및 문장 전체 수식을 한다. to부정사도 부사와 같은 역할을 한다.

He studied very hard to pass the exam. (목적: ~~하기 위해)
My grandfather lived to be ninety years old. (결과:~~ 하다보니 --하다)
He did his best only to fail.(결과: ~~했지만 --하다)
He wept to hear the news. (원인: ~~하고서/~~로 인해)
To hear my son sing a song, you will think him a singer. (조건: ~~한다면)
To do his best, he couldn't finish the project. (양보: ~~했지만/~~할지라도)
He must be rich to drive an Equus. (판단의 기준: ~~하는 걸 보니)
This problem is difficult for her to solve. (판단의 근거: ~~하기에는)
To tell the truth, the lady over there is your mother. (문장전체 수식)

[주의] 부정사의 부정: 부정사 바로 앞에 부정어를 쓴다.

[예문] 

He studied very hard not to fail.
My mother told me never to go out.

I tried not to read the Bible.(성서를 읽지 않으려고 안간힘을 썼다.)
I didn't try to read the Bible.(성서 읽기를 등한시 했다.)
